Foreign Relations Committee Opposes More Troops
Earlier today, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 12-9 to approve Joe Biden’s (D-DE) opposition resolution to President Bush’s proposed 21,500-soldier addition to those already deployed in Iraq. This means that the opposition resolution will be heard on the Senate floor within the next week or so. A possible competing resolution would be John Wagner’s (R-VA) American forces clarification proposal, which calls for more concrete benchmarks in managing the Iraqi insurgency as well as making clear that American troops are to remain uninvolved in incidents not directly concerning the Iraqi government (anything that is sectarian violence and not sedition or treason).

Can the deployment of more troops to Iraq really serve any great purpose? To me it seems just as affective as trying to put out your buring house by using a garden house. The situation has gotten away from us, and many of the republicans are even begging to realize that we need another option, one that can be utilized without the expense of more soldiers lives. Even if you do create a benchmark, there is no stopping those who wish to involve U.S. troops, by attacking them.
It is unfortunate that Political strategy involves peoples lives, but the democrats have to be like pigs-in-you-know-what right now. Pelosi reports she won't cut funding (for the sake of the troops) (it's in the 110th congress primer). The Democrats will likely let the President continue his plan, more seats for them in 2008. As the republicans distance themselves to keep their jobs, it will reflect poorly on the party as a whole. We wont see the democrats unravel until the primaries.
