This is a class blog for the students of POLSCI 426: Congressional Politics at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.

The Art of Compromise

Politics is the art of compromising just enough to get what one wants (or needs). That is the mantra that the Bush Administration is foing to have to learn when it comes to dealing with the new Congress. Neither side is going to get all of what they want in regard to the war issue, however no matter what happens we must think about those over there first. This should not be a debatable issue. I want out just as much as Pelosi (and secretly I'm sure Bush) but we cannot just cut and run. Our elected leaders should do the job they were elected to do and compromise enough to get the #1 problem taken care of. If they can do that then we can argue and bicker over all the other details.

it is obvious that both sides are going to need to make some concessions on this issue. i agree that funding for the troops should be the foremost issue in this matter. however, the democratic congress is showing its muscle after being left out in the cold for the better part of 6 years. i don't believe a timetable or leaving is the answer. but, if things don't start changing over there what's the difference if we do just leave?

Bush needs to realize that he is not going to get anywhere, he is going to have to make some concessions in respect to the troop pullout. Democrats will need to make some concessions to, not everyone is going to get what they want. I wonder how much our presence in Iraq makes a difference? I don't think that much, as the country is still a mess and thousands of Americans have died in vain. Its time to leave, Iraq has to make care of itself. Bush wants a blank check so he can try to fix Iraq, but in the end we have to pay for it with our taxes.

I am sick of the comparison between Iraq and Vietnam but there are definite similiraties. Neither Democrats or Republicans pulled out of Vietnam exactly the way they wanted but it took a brand new administration to get us out. Two years is a long time to wait when there are civilians and troops dying every day. Personally I think we have no business in another countries Civil War, even if we caused it.
