House approves funding for Head Start, rejects religion amendment

The house has approved funding for the program Head Start. The programs helps prepare local income children for school. What was striking was that Republicans wanted to add religious amendments, making it possible to fire and hire someone based on religion. Isn't that a violation of the Constitution? Democrats though amendment the bill confirms the rights of religious people to participate in the program.

I'm not terribly surprised Republicans wanted to add some sort of questionable amendment to try and stymie the effort to give more funding to Head Start programs. The people who utilize Head Start are typically economically disadvantaged and can't afford adequate childcare. As we've talked about in many classes at UWM, these are not typical Republican voters. Interesting, though, that they'd choose religion. If anyone wants more information on Head Start in Wisconsin, here's the site:

This is a surprising but welcome turn of events, as National Reporting System data were used as rationale for de-funding Head Start. New standards are needed at least once every decade due to the Flynn effect (a slight increase in the overall knowledge or apparent IQ of each the population from generation to generation) as well as reduced relevance of certain knowledge (such as knowing what a telegraph does). For similar reasons of annual adjustment of actual comparison baselines despite a fixed technical comparison baseline, it is about time they increased the cap to 130% of the poverty level, as anyone who has children who would use the program certainly cannot adequately care for all each child’s needs at 130% of the federally defined and quickly antiquated poverty level.
The representatives who tried to amend this bill to allow religious preference/discrimination in a federally obviously don’t care about coming across as incompetent to constituents who know the laws germane to the hiring practices of federally funded programs. This is somewhat logical because extreme MCs don’t care about being moderate due to strong security in their district (such that voting for extreme positions is fulfilling the wishes of most of their district constituents, which usually results in substantial party funding to cement the incumbent for another term).

I think Head Start is an excellent program and Im happy to hear of it's success. I would be very interested to hear some of the arguments of these republicans who wants to discriminate based upon religion. I would definately agree that that goes against our constitution.

It is obviuosly apparent that we need some sort of Head Start program to help our children. Hopefully parents and the students can take these opportunities and use them to their fullest.
