Two More G.O.P. Congressmen Won’t Run

It seems that there is a growing list of Republican congresspeople who will not be running for reelection in 2008. Is this significant news? Do you think incumbent Republicans deciding not to run has anything to do with Democrats' 2006 win in Congress or the upcoming Presidential election?

I don't think it has so much to do with the dems victory in 2006 as it has more to do with they are getting old. It may be good for the GOP to have up and coming candidates instead of old incumbents

Whether it's significant I would think would depend on if the GOP will remain competitive in the districts being vacated, i.e. if they're spending a lot of money (or will have to, now) or have a strong Republican base there. For each rep individually it's an interesting development to look at...maybe they have other goals (article mentions one will run for governorship), maybe they were old, maybe they just didn't like being in the minority, and maybe the list will get even bigger.

I read in the New York Times today about Representative Tom Davis being the 5th Republican in the last week that he will not be running for re-election. I do think this could have an effect on the Presidential election, but a minor effect is anything. Many Americans are not involved with politics enough to even know that there have been many Republicans not running for reelection in 2008. However, for the people who are involved in the Presidential election I think they may feel that Republicans not seeking reelection may have a negative impact on the Republican Presidential candidates.
