Johnson and Feingold to debate three times

I chose this article because debates can really have an impact on a congressional race. The number of times can be tricky to determine because just as a member can improve themselves in a debate, they can also screw themselves as well. I know Feingold wanted five debates at one time, but they had to compromise to three.

I think Feingold should have the advantage in the debates, considering Johnson has no previous experience in politics and his career as a businessman doesn't really prepare one very well for a debate against a guy who's been in politics for years and who's done numerous high level debates.

How do we know that debates "matter?" Do many people watch them? Are they something that pundits and political junkies pay attention to? Or something more?
