House panel votes to subpoena Rice on Iraq
On a party line vote, the House of Representatives' Oversight and Government Reform Committee directed Rice to appear before the panel next month. Republicans are calling it a fishing expedition, but Dems are saying they just want to ask questions and to explain herself. This is a good example of the accountability in our American politics. In another country many politicians could simply refuse despite any wishes from their colleleagues in the government.

The Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee (OGRC) are performing primarily show horse procedures because there is little benefit to be derived from questioning Condi now. The OGRC could stand to perform some work horse procedures such as determining the extent to which pork riders are allowed on Iraq appropriations bills as well as the extent to which those appropriations are being wisely spent. Some notable mistakes it failed to catch recently include allowing the Halliburton contracts that vastly over-paid Cheney’s company to install gas pipelines and to feed troops food that most of them found so unpalatable that they ate at local Iraqi restaurants.
