Kohl now leaning moderate

Senator herb Kohl is now joining a coalition of 15 Democrats who are committed to be more fiscally responsible. Kohl Said that he wants to be more responsible because he fears that some initiatives being put out there that could hurt Wisconsinites. With the senate being a super majoritarian institution, this kind of coalition could hurt the more liberal dems. Kohl is specifically against the cap and trade measure that could raise energy bills on coal burning states like Wisconsin. Both him and Sen. Feingold voted against the measure.

This is a definite reflection of our representatives on the national level representing their constituents' interests. Wisconsin is a moderately left-leaning state and Herb Kohl reflects that by being a part of a moderate coalition of Democrats. Meanwhile, Kohl and Feingold's votes against the cap and trade initiative show that abandoning strong economic state interests and political lobbies can be threatening to their political careers and must be avoided in order to continue to have successful ones.

To me it has always seemed as though Kohl and Feingold cancel eachother out (on the left side of the spectrum). Feingold being more left-leaning than Kohl, both being Democrats. It is always rather frustrating to me when any members of Congress for moderate subgroups in either chamber. It dulls the division between the two parties. Of course we know that the median vote will always prevail, but its groups such as this, the New Democrat Coalition, and Blue Dog Democrats (to name a few) that take away from the necessary partisanship to ensure strong parties. As far as Kohl representing Wisconsin's interests, he can do that without becoming a moderate group member. Feingold is much more liberal, protects the interests of America and Wisconsin, and still manages to be reelected by a healthy margin by the state as a whole.
