Doyle lobbies for more UW funds

Wisconsin currently spends the same amount of money on prisons than it does on universities. Governor Doyle is proposing $178 million dollars for UW colleges. This is interesting because in his first term Doyle completely slashed the budget for Universities. UW Milwaukee will stand to gain 9 million dollars if the budget passes. What do you think the school plans on spending the money on? Parking? More computer labs? Nope, it wants to compete with UW Madison and spend the money on research and get their $143 million dollar new school of engineering off the ground.

Doyle's budget is outrageous. I just cant see how there can be money for everything he is proposing. I think he is going about his policy decisions, based on a simple fact, he more than likely wont be running again, he can be as liberal as he wishes. I dont understand though, why he hasnt given schools more money before this, thats one thing he should have actually proposed long ago.

I'm fully on board with the establishment of the new engineering and development project. UW-Madison has an endowment of over $1 billion. You don't get that by more computer labs or parking. Doyle makes a clear point in saying that tuition at Madison is still less than the Big Ten average. What about us in Milwaukee? I frankly find it outrageous that we pay nearly as much in tuition here at UWM ($3315/semester) as they do in Madison ($3365/semester). Last time I checked, UWM was not a Big Ten school, so what about us? We are well overdue for some real funding increases for everything, but you've got to start somewhere.

This sounds like something he would do. I am not opposed to more funding so long as it is used to keep tuition down, or even lower it. But what college in the US has ever lowered tuition?? UWM is here to educate the masses as opposed to Madison which seems to be only interested in those who have $$$ and/or an IQ over 140. We should get more money than they do simply because this is the only major "wisconsin" institution left in higher education.

The engineering program has potential to be a revenue source, which then might help reduce the rate of tuition increase. It’s accurate to say that no governor will allocate additional funds to a university to lower tuition for students due to that maneuver being too similar to being a subsidization for college students. What makes more sense for the state is to offer more student loans and to invest in research capital to increase the likelihood of peddling high-tech products.
