Sen. McCain gets tough on global warming & foreign oil reliance
John McCain is aggressively pushing his stance on global warming and foreign oil reliance. He is trailing other Rep. presidential hopefuls in both the polls and fundraising. He believes national security goes hand-in-hand with energy security. He believes by relying so much on foreign sources of oil, we are in turn financing the terrorists we are fighting against. His language is very strong on the issue and is quite surprising for a republican. Many republicans, the Bush administraion include, have gone out of their way to discount global warming and our nation's reliance on oil. It will be interesting to see the effects on his overall fundraising efforts after this.

Another example of how it may be hard for McCain to win the primary.
McCain’s spin on why dependence on foreign oil is bad for the U.S. is a clever way of linking the liberal interests of ecologists with the conservative interests of domestic drilling advocates. By sacrificing some American natural areas, we can theoretically prevent millions of dollars from reaching enemy hands and therefore help save American lives. This balancing of partisan interests makes McCain a true moderate who is likely to be proximal to the median electorate preference. If he wins the primary or is chosen by a different front runner for vice president, he will undoubtedly be one of the most effective vote-getters.
I think its great to see a Republican candidate going green and not just in a tree hugger way. He is right about America's dependency on oil and how it finances the middle east and terrorism. Discounting global warming at this point doesn't look good for anyone politically. Americans are starting to realize that it is happening and they want their leaders to do something about it.
