Pelosi Struggles to Keep Democrat Moderates on Board for Healthcare Reform

Maintaining moderate support is proving to be a continued uphill battle for Speaker Pelosi as she tries to assemble her caucus. Wary of negative political consequences in 2010, many moderates have begun to abandon current healthcare reform efforts altogether.

With the resignation of Rep. Nathan Deal (R-GA) the threshold in the house for passing HCR is at 216 instead of 217.

Speaker Pelosi has proven to be a pretty adept vote whipper in her 7 years as Democratic leader (4 as minority leader, 3 as Speaker).

Most opinion polls have shown that Democrats face the most dire electoral consequences if they do nothing with HCR, and would do well to pass any bill.

And then, there's that pesky unemployment thing ...

I do agree that a bill needs to be passed. Even if it's only laying groundwork for the future.
