Earmarks

The Chronicle of Higher Education published an article about the record number of earmarks members of Congress are granting to colleges/universities. This year alone, 2,306 earmarks were given to 920 institutions. Most of the earmarks were directed towards scientific research at the institutions. An interesting fact in this article is the earmarked money for colleges of Clinton, Obama, and McCain. Clinton has had 21 earmarks, Obama 10 earmarks, and McCain no earmarks. Although this may not be a key issue, I think that it shows how important they think academic research is for the U.S.

I as well believe that research within the United States is one of the most important areas where we can invest money. Yes we need to have money for our governmental programs that help the daily lives however our economy is essential based off of technology. In order for our economy to be strong in the future we need to put some money into future development of new products.

While research in the realm of alternative forms of energy is beneficial, as well as military/space technology, I don't think it should be the government's role to spur innovative products or technology. The private sector has led the process of innovation, well, since, forever; one lesson we should all learn is that leaving more in the hands of the government is only a bad thing, as government has shown itself to be an inefficient handler.

If anything, I would like to see my money go to education, and certain entitlements that I see working. Government research should never be placed above programs that do help our fellow countrymen.
