This is a class blog for the students of POLSCI 426: Congressional Politics at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee.
Winter Break
Thanks for some top quality blogging this semester folks. Have a nice winter break. Hopefully, I will see some of you in POL SCI 421 in the Fall. I know some of you are already in POL SCI 387 this Spring.
Daisy: Updated
In an ad closely echoing President Johnson's 1964 "Daisy" ad, the American Values Network has updated the sentiments of the "Daisy" ad to warn against delaying ratification of a new arms treaty with Russia.
Republican power
This article continues the saga of the Tax cuts and discusses how Senate Republicans are working together to ensure that no bill gets passed unless the tax cuts are extended for all. It is very interesting to see these kind of tactics being used when such bills as money for 9-11 rescue workers is being sidelined in order to push a tax cut for the richest portions of Americans.
House Republicans Overhaul Work Calender
This is just a cool article dealing with what the GOP is going to change within the House, not just in its agenda but within the structure of the work hours of the House and other things like how long they will meet, how many days and when they will end their session. It will be much different then when the House was controlled by Democrats.
Wisconsin boy making it big?
Reince Priebus, Chairman of the Wisconsin Republican Party, is running for RNC Chairman. Given the success he had it makes sense. One wonders if the national party had taken his approach of embracing the Tea Party instead of running against them (I'm talking to you Delaware and Nevada) if the "wave" could have been bigger. Perhaps we will find out.
Tea Party Chair
Sarah Palin turned down the chance to be the leader of the Tea Party in the Republican National Committee. Now the attention has been turned to Saul Anuzis of Michigan.
Vicki Kennedy possibly making a run at it..
We've talked about how much it means to be a Kennedy in Massachusetts so it wouldnt surprise me if she made a run at Scott Browns seat. Even with all that power of the Kennedy name it would still be a tough task to beat Scott Brown.
Liberal Arts Essay
Professor Tofias posted information about this essay competition a couple weeks back. I wrote an essay for this competition at UWGB in the Spring of 2008 and it was one of three selected to compete statewide. Regardless whether your essay is selected and regardless whether you win any money, you should all write an essay expressing your viewpoints on a liberal arts education and submit it. A diversity of points of view is the foundation for the liberal arts. If we all had the same perspectives and beliefs, then education would be pretty simple.
Those of you deciding to write an essay should read some of the previous winners' essays for guidance. I'm also available for assistance. My commencement speech had a lot of material on the liberal arts (some from my essay) and was actually published here: http://liberaleducation.uwsa.edu/pdf/Schmidt-Ben_CommencementSpeech20090516.pdf by the same group organizing this essay competition.
Good luck!

Talks of Redistricting
We talked about re-districting a couple of weeks or so. Well, this article discusses Nevada that I stumbled upon doing research for my project. It discusses how Nevada is expected to gain a seat. Currently, Nevada has three congressional districts, but is expected to gain a seat in the next census. One is quite Democratic which you will see a very beautiful presentation on Monday, one is quite Republican, and one is moderate/lean Republican, or at least has shown some middle ground. The question is how to re-district Nevada because currently, the districts are about even in population and also competetive. Although they are worred the seat gain could blow that up.
Poll on Bush Tax Cuts
Since the Bush Tax Cuts are supposed to expire at the end of this year I thought it would be interesting to find some information dealing with public opinion on this issue. I found a poll on CNN that has a pretty cool article about the cuts and this poll taken by CNN/Opinion Research Group.
Republicans and democrats at it again
This article focuses on three issues, the tax cuts, government funding, and the republicans versus the democrats in the lame duck senate. Republicans threaten to vote against any bill brought forth by the democrats unless the tax cut issue and government funding issue are resolved. The democrats have offered to pass the tax cuts but only for those making 250,000 or less, the republicans say that's not enough. So neither side seems willing to compromise or work together.
Wolf Politics
This article is a brief glimpse at one of the endless issues that special interest groups can have a influence upon. According to the New York Times, legislation to remove the gray wolf from protection by the Endangered Species Act, or alternately to exempt only those located in Idaho in Wyoming, is currently under discussion. As the article states, "Either would set a terrible precedent, opening the door for special-interest groups to push other inconvenient species off the list. The bills would undercut one of the primary reasons for the act, which was to relieve Congress of the impossible task of legislating protections species by species and leave the final determination to scientists and wildlife management professionals."
Pajama Party: New to Congress, Many Members Plan to Sleep Over
It seems more members of Congress will be sleeping in their offices come January. I think you know of my long time fascination with living conditions endured by our most treasured of public servants.

The Palins Ensure They Stay in the News
This article takes a brief look at Sarah Palin's continuing efforts to stay in the news. While Palin may not have established herself yet as a definite presidential candidate for 2012, her current cross-country book tour will be taking her to key states on the electoral map.
Lame-Duck Session Looking Longer
Democrats are scrambling to get things done during the lame-duck session, but worried about being stalled by republicans or even by the "lame-ducks" who have likely lost their motivation along with losing re-election. The title of this article makes it seem like the drawing out of the session is a big deal, but as I understand this, the usual "target date" to adjourn is rarely met.
Crazy Alaska
If Sarah Palin was not enough, now Alaska has more problems with the Republican Party. The Republican primary winner, John Miller, lost the election to Lisa Murkowski, who he beat in the primary due to ballot write ins. Now he is taking this to the courts over the matter of counting ballots with spelling errors.
Censure
Someone posted about Charlie Rangel earlier and how a ethics committee reccommended a censure for him. Well, I didn't exactly know what that meant. Maybe I should have from past classes and just didn't pay attention, which wouldn't be entirely too shocking. Well, here is a document explaining what exactly a censure is. It is basically a big public reprimand.
And the winner is?
When passengers on airlines have to now remove prostatic parts to prove they will not blow up airplans, but continue to allow women wearing their hijabs, we as a country have lost our way. Israel has screaning process correct, they profile. Seems to be working fine, but until we as a country make our representatives understand this enhanced searching or having your body scanned, 80 year old women and citizens with prostatic parts are the suspects, not the people that look the part.
Sarah Palin's Alaska
I figured this would be relevant since Sarah Palin claimed that she could beat President Obama in 2012, and the candidate that she backed for the Alaskan Senate seat lost. It's pretty evident that Ms. Palin is using this show to advance her political career, at one point she talks about the fence she built as an example for what America could do to keep out illegal immigrants, and in another she elaborates on her political catchphrase about "mama grizzlies"
House members use lottery to choose offices
I thought this was pretty interesting that it is pure luck of whether or not you get a good office.
Mark McGwire tesifying to Congress
I know we talked about this in class so i posted it. Its a short video but everyone knows he lied to congress about taking steriods but eventually fesses up to it. Not a big deal because everyone knew he was on steriods plus now he for sure wont be in the Hall of Fame which he doesnt belong in anyways so that's a good thing.
Obama's electoral coalition
Follow up to my previous article about the Dems shrinking coalition, this time focusing on the President and the elctoral map. I was stunned at the results from the PPP(D) generic polling (we can argue about generic polling but I think it has some value). Especially him being down so much in New Hampshire, Nevada and other blueish states he should still be favorable in.
Call for Censure for Rangel
This blogging feature from the New York Times offers an interesting look at the House Committee on Standards of Official Conduct in its proceedings today over the case of Representative Charles Rangel, who was earlier this week charged with committing numerous ethics violations.
The Committee eventually concluded that Rangel be subjected to a formal censure, which, if approved by the House, will entail the public rebuking of Rangel before his colleagues by the Speaker. As we continue to discuss their importance in class, this is an interesting glimpse of a committee in action and its power to influence and affect those who serve in Congress.

Pelosi wins
Pelosi has been elected to lead the democrats in the House as the minority leader. This article ties into some of the information discussed on Monday about house leadership.
Midwest Battle Gounds
I thought this was a good informative article. It highlights some key reasons why the Midwest voted so strongly in favor of the GOP in the recent midterms. Most notably it points to white blue collar workers with no college degree as the main demographic responsible for the unfortunate 2010 election results.
This, however, is not surprising. The hardest hit group by the economic downturn has indeed been this demographic. Milwaukee, for example, has recently jumped from the 8th poorest city in the U.S. to the 4th. It is understandable that the fear of job loss and poverty should arouse desires for a shift in leadership. Yet, in this case, making that shift meant voting against one’s own interests. If the blue collar workers of Wisconsin are struggling now, they will be even worse off if Republicans cut construction projects such as the rail, badger care, various government jobs, and many important social programs.

Dems shrinking coalition?
Great article that really disects the voting breakdown, particularily in suburban and swing areas
Rangel Is Found to Have Violated House Ethics Rules
Former Democratic Ways and Means Committee Chair Charlie Rangel (NY-15) has been found guilty of 11 ethics violations. I wonder if his awfully close election would have gone the other way had this ruling had come out a couple of months ago...
McConnell Caves On Earmarks, Pledges To Vote For Moratorium
Jim DeMint, taking care of the GOP brand name.
History Suggests That This Year's Midterm Losers May Try Again
Losers not going away is sorta a sub-theme of the course, no? Also, I think at least one of you is doing a project on a 2010 loser.
More on the Unexperienced Freshman in Congress
Here is also a link to a cool interactive map that shows all the newcomers and what their previous jobs experience is.
Obama reelection
This article discusses the recent gain of Republican seats in Congress from the midterm election and what it could mean for Obama in 2012. The article specifically looks at the states Obama won in the 2008 election that voted Republican for the congressional election and what this could mean for Obama in 2012. Another factor that could effect Obama in 2012 is his currently low approval ratings.
Most Inexperienced Freshmen Elected to Congress Since 1948
This article talks about the impact that Washinton's newcomers might have. The article does make the point that history suggests that Washington is more likely to change them. I think it will be interesting to watch what these newbies do or don't do...and if they will stick to promised term limits or if Washington power will sway them.
Tea Party and the RNC already going at it
I think this is pretty interesting considering youd think the RNC would try and make Tea party members part of the party.
Fox News, Republican? NO WAY!
This had been mentioned in class on Wednesday, so I looked into it a little bit and here it is, straight from the democratic white house.
Tax Cuts for all
The tax cuts might be extended for everyone and that is including the wealthy portion of Americans. According to the article the administration wants to keep its promise to the middle class and is willing to reach an agreement on the tax cuts with republicans.
Despite Losses, Nancy Pelosi to Run for House Post
As we discussed in class this week, party leadership can contribute significantly to the shaping of both a political party's power and agenda in Congress. This New York Times article discusses Nancy Pelosi's recent decision to run in next week's party elections in an effort to remain the leader of House Democrats, and whether or not Pelosi's decision may ultimately have a negative impact on the 2012 elections.
2010 Election
Here is an interesting article by the Pew Research Group. They look at Religion a little bit more close and it shows some interesting numbers.
New Speaker of the House and President
Even though President Obama and John Boehner are from different parties, they seem to have a lot in common. Which reminds people when Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich were in their office positions together. ... Is this a good or bad thing?
Gays and the GOP
The gay lobby gave the GOP some gains with the mid term elections, as they feel the GOP will be more inturne to there issues.
2012 Senate Race
Although the elections just ended, those running in 2012 are just about to kick off their campaigns. This article is solely about the Senate, however those in the House will have to start getting ready for their campaigns as well, just like we discussed in class.
A Historic Shift
This interactive feature from the New York Times takes a look at the national trends and demographic groups that played a large role this year's election results.
2012
Its never too early too look to the next election cycle. For all the talk of Republicans trying to win the Senate this year, that was likely unrealistic because 18 of the seats up this year were Rupublican seats, and many of the Democratic seats up were pretty safe (Cal, Conn, Del, New York x2, Was, Ore, Haw, and Vermont. But the 2012 Senate elections are a different story. There are no fewer than 14 Democratic seats that, based on the current climate, that will be very vulnurable.
Welcome, Senate Conservatives
This Op-Ed is AWESOME, Jim DeMint isn't my favorite Senator but he nails it in this piece. He discusses a lot of the pressures that face newcomers to Congress and it touches on a lot of what we've discussed in class with regard to the institutional challenges that have to be overcome
Republican Game Plan for 2010
This New York Times article talks about the Republican's game plan for taking over the House and how they have been planning it since before President Obama's election. Does anyone else think that if the Democrats had called them out more strongly on their methods they would not have lost as many seats? Or were national tides too strong to go against?
The GOP and their redistricting
This article ties in directly with our discussion on Wednesday and goes into a little more detail on the process than we did in class.
An ad encouraging latinos to NOT vote..
i saw this on the colbert report. i think this is an interesting and crazy ad to put on air. i think it was pulled right away though.
Up To 2.2 Million People Could Vote Tuesday
A turnout projection for Wisconsin from the Government Accountability Board.
VOTE OR DIE!
I'm only registered in Madison so I voted absentee on my lunch break from work on Thursday. Just for fun: I never vote strictly party line, and XXXXX.
I have a feeling, call it a premonition, that I've voted for XXXX again, but hey I voted with my heart, and I never would have even voted if I hadnt been subconciously coerced into doing so in lecture on Wednesday.
So anyway...GO VOTE! Or dont I dont care.
EDITED [TOFIAS]: Let's not talk about who we voted for.

ADs ADs Ads
politico highlights some of the more controversial and shameless last ditch efforts to slander and defame opponents before tuesday.
Joe Manchin Ad
I posted this ad because it speaks a lot to what we talked about in class when it comes to Congressional races being tied to the president's aproval. Manchin is a Democrat and in this ad he is saying he is going to repeal some of Obama care, that guns are good which usually a no, no for Democrats, and that he won't allow cap and trade to pass because it will hurt West Virginia's coal mining. Some feel Manchin would just be a "rubber stamp" for Obama, but this ad tries to distance himself from Obama.
Schumer and Durbin's under the radar play for leader
Article about how Senators Schumer and Durbin are pumping money to Democrats and state parties, no doubt subtely laying the groundwork for a run at leader if Harry Reid looses.
In Minnesota, A Tight Race for Governor With No Incumbent
Although this article discusses a gubernatorial race rather than a Congressional one, it still ties in very well with our recent discussion of incumbents and challengers. Though we have discussed the kind of situations that occur when strong incumbents or strong challengers run for re-election or election, it is quite interesting to see a real-life situation play out in which there are three challengers without the threat of an incumbent. The article also hints at the spatial model in relation to where each challenger lies on the political spectrum!
Best and Worst of the 2010 Political Ads
This is a short segment from the Today Show discussing the year's best and worst political ads. The round-up for this year includes demon sheep and candidates who kick children in the face!
The Making of a Political Viral Video
Barney Frank's challenger tries to go viral on the internet with a political advertisement.
Carly for California Ad
A pretty funny advertisement used by Carly Fiorina (R) running for Senator in California.
"Different This Time Around?"
It seems as though everyone is commenting on the upcoming midterms and in most cases it seems as though their analysis of it is wrong. Yes, the GOP is going to walk away with some significant gains but, is this really any different than any other midterm? The short answer is no however, there is a certain intangible difference in the level of anger and frustration that the article eludes to.
Also, the effect of John Stewart and Stephan Colbert is a little overplayed. I, as I assume the rest of the class too, do not pull there political news from late night comedy shows.

Feingold v Johnson
As election day approaches, according to this article, Feingold would be more then happy to have the election come down to which candidate is "fiscally responsible". What it comes down to is, which candidate can sell their ideas more, both are completely different and it looks like Feingold will have a run for his money with Johnson.
Powerful Statement
This ad by Sharron Angle's supporters makes several powerful messages and uses footage from real news segments to portray Reid as a failure when it came to protecting Nevada's jobs.
Where to Donate?
So let's say you want to make a campaign contribution this midterm that will give you the biggest bang for your buck. Sam Wang argues you should contribute to the Nevada, West Virginia, Colorado, or Illinois Senate campaigns. His advice combines both the size of the state and it's competitiveness (link via Brendan Nyhan).
I Am Not a Witch... Not that there's anything wrong with that
Christine O'Donnel's much maligned campaign ad, where she tries to rebut the jokes about her dabbling in witchcraft that stemmed from her declaration many years ago on Bill Maher's show. The failure of her ad in trying to move beyond the issue was brought up in her debate by Wolf Blitzer, and lampooned on Saturday Night Live
Really
Somebody please help me understand what is going on in this country! I always thought that if something is “illegal” it is prohibited from someone or some organization to do. So please tell me this isn’t true what I’ve just read, that it’s okay for people the country illegally are politically campaigning for a “Democrat” for votes. Wow, where are we headed?
Feingold and Johnson in a dead heat according to recent poll
Senator Feingold is two points (within the margin of error; hence either one could possibly be ahead of the other) behind Ron Johnson in a recent St. Norbert College poll. However, even if Senator Feingold is leading, will voter participation play a role in a Feingold loss?
Democrats & the House
I found this article to be pretty relative to our class lecture on Wednesday. The article reports on the House's upcoming election and how Democrats are in danger of losing majority control and the reasons for their loss of voter support. The article also discusses the incumbent v. challenger element of campaigns.
Keeping the Theme going
The Wall Street Journal article about how the labor union AFSCME leads all groups, including the Chamber of Commerce by $12 million, in spending this election. Talks about how they can spend more money after citizens united, so the question becomes if both sides can spend money more easily doesn't it even out. Answer an attack ad with one of your own. It bight bore the average tv viewer, but nobody watches commercials anymore thanks to dvr and such.
Follow Up Re: Money in Elections/Robert's America
I wanted to pose this question related to the link above and the posts below to see if anyone has an opinion:
Does the new interpretation of rights to free speech a la the Citizens decision invite this type of interaction between lawmakers and partisan support groups?
Specifically, could this have gone on before Citizens, and assuming the answers is yes to some degree is, it easier or more advantageous in light of the loosened restrictions due to Citizens?

Don’t Follow the Money
David Brooks calls money in politics, "primitive mythology of the political class." He alludes to some of the ideas we are studying right now about the relationship between winning elections and campaign finance.
John Roberts' America
In class this week, we discussed elections as it relates to candidates, as well as how money can have a significant influence upon candidates' campaigns.
This article considers the current ramifications of the Citizens-United ruling, and how significantly the ruling has affected this year's midterms, especially for a general population that continues to be inundated with political ads paid for by unknown sources.

Debates
I know this is a Congress class and all but I found this relevant because I believe I posted something about debates earlier with Feingold and Johnson. This is the New York Governor's debate, and it really shows how debates can help in a way, but they can also be almost comical and some feel a waste of time. That is if even people watch them. Although this one was really funny and I kind of wish I could find a full version of this one because the rent is too damn high.
Obama Campaign Trail in 2010
President Obama is on a campaign trail on the West Coast trying to urge the significance of the Mid-Term Elections of 2010. He is also trying to get in his say for his seat in 2012. This is a very cool article depicting what Professor Tofias brought forth during class on Monday saying that Obama is not only pushing for democratic Senators and Reps, but he is also pushing for his own ticket in 2012.
Crunch time=lots of commericals
This article ties in with some of our discussion during out last class. It discusses the amount of adds being played in Nevada and other cities as well as how the GOP is spending more money, probably due to the fact that they are the challengers as we learned in class.
Realignment of Southern Party Politics
In class we talked about the President's interest in Congressional elections. How his goal is a unified government or to minimize the number of seats lost. We also talked about his power to endorse and campaign for his parties candidates. Right now in the South, where the Democrats stand to lose a lot of seats in what could prove to be a major political realignment or party politics. Because of this, many of the democrats are trying to distance themselves from Obama and the party program.
Gutter Politics
Kentucky senate candidates, Rand Paul and Jack Conway are now in a dirty fight over "gutter politics". Conway's campaign created a commercial that exposed Paul and his religion choices in college. Paul called Conway out on a televised debate asking for an apology...
Don't asked don't tell because I don't want to know
When a man is in a foxhole fighting for his life, it’s not the time for the man next to him to say, “hay buddy, I’m gay”. No body in the military needs to know that nor does anyone care about the life style anyone is living. But now come a judge from California overruling the congress regarding this issue I feel should be kept secret. I always thought we elect a congress to pass rules and laws and that it’s up the courts to interpret the law and not make them. Elections have consequences!
The Education of President Obama
This article is an interesting examination of just how much Obama's relationship with Congress has affected his first two years in office, both in the eyes of the general public as well as in the eyes of Washington.
As Obama states in the article, "we probably spent much more time trying to get the policy right than trying to get the politics right. There is probably a perverse pride in my administration — and I take responsibility for this; this was blowing from the top — that we were going to do the right thing, even if short-term it was unpopular. And I think anybody who’s occupied this office has to remember that success is determined by an intersection in policy and politics and that you can’t be neglecting of marketing and P.R. and public opinion.”

TV ADS
So, while never missing a single riveting episode of Jeopardy last week I couldn't help but notice a few political ads that aired. I am honestly undecided about these two candidates; Although I think Feingold owned the debates in a substantive sense, I don't know how much real substance plays into voter's minds at the ballots compared to precisely planned and rhetorically charged campaign ads. Here are two and my opinions of them:
Johnson's I think is poignant, altough it doesnt make mention of the usefulness a working knowledge of the law can have in creating them, the numbers themselves are striking. Even if the implied connection between the lack of manufacturers and accountants in the Senate and the exploding national debt is a fallacious one, politics is about perception.
Feingold's... is pointless. Seriously, you gotta believe I am not rooting for anyone here...but can anyone honestly tell me what the hell just happened? Maybe you need to go to Harvard AND be a Rhodes scholar to pick up on all the allegories...idk.
SOOO I CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO INCLUDE 2 LINKS IN THE BODY OF THE POST THAT YOU CAN CLICK ON SO HERES THE FEINGOLD AD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcXmx0boNBA

Feingold v. Johnson Leads in Campaign Ads
As we're moving into our course module on elections, it seems pretty useful that we're knee deep in campaigns. In fact, Wisconsin leads in total Senate campaign television ads aired since September 1st. Be on the lookout for good ones and link to them.
Tea Party Targeting Dems
The Tea Party Express is ready to take off on another rally across states to target Democrats. They newly added Democrat from Mass. Barney Frank to their "hit list". He is added to the list with Harry Reid from Nevada.
funding secrets!
We haven't really mentioned funding in class yet, but I found this article very interesting since we have the democrats primarily Obama and Gibbs calling out the Republicans for receiving donations from undisclosed sources. Though it was pointed out in the article that the democrats are guilty of the same action. My overall point is should we allow either party to keep their supporters private? I personally believe we should force candidates to disclose a list of all their supporters because ultimately when we vote for candidates we are also voting for the agendas of these undisclosed supporters since they can influence a candidate with their supply of cash.
A Vote Some Dems Might Regret
Political scientists Steven Greene and Seth Masket find that Democratic members of the House who represent conservative districts and voted for healthcare reform are taking about a 3% point hit in their quest for reelection.
Advertisements for Democrats?
More Democrats are running ads making themselves seem more Republican. Mostly saying they go against Obama and Pelosi.
Debates Tonight (Friday, 10/8)
Just a reminder that in addition to tonight's Senatorial debate being held in Milwaukee between incumbent Dem Russ Feingold and GOP new-comer Ron Johnson;
Attorney General JB Van Hollen and his Democrat challenger Scott Hassett will square off tonight on PBS as well.
7:30 PBS "Here and Now" - (R) Van Hollen vs. (D) Hassett
8:00 CBS Senate Debate - (R) Johnson vs. (D) Feingold
Finally the article I posted is supposed to be in conjunction with the following as an effort to sort of create a juxtaposition between the style and strategy employed by the two candidates.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/104462169.html
Feingold seems to be out there shamelessly self promoting in an effort to turn out voters, while Johnson seems to be shamefully avoiding debates and the press in an effort to contain and control his image.
Either way I think a lot can be gained or lost by both candidates tonight, should make for an interesting debate!

Poll Results
This article gives a lot of really great poll results that we could imagine on a political spectrum. They give more accurate account of Obama's favoribilty than, nobody likes him. There is also a really interesting link to an interactive map for the key contests that are predicted to decide the 2010 elections.
Money=votes? maybe not
With the monumental decision Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission, the barrier on how much money corporations can spend on campaigns was lifted. One might think that this would make an enormous difference in the outcome of an election, but this article says that before Corporations still spent a lot of money on advertisements during elections, but the had to be about issues of the election, not supporting one candidate over another, while now they can directly endorse one candidate over another in commercials. The money being spent since the 2006 midterm elections has more than doubled, and the money is strongly favoring Republicans, so we will have to see if this money spending will make a difference in this election.
The Founding Fathers versus the Tea Party
Considering that our discussion this week revolved around both the Founders and the Tea Party, I thought this article was a very relevant examination of the link that exists between the two groups. Although the Tea Party seems to be trying to bulk up its credibility by claiming a tie to the Founding Fathers, as we discussed in class, the Founders were hardly the harmonious group that we may sometimes view them as being. As the article states, "Any movement that regularly summons the ghosts of the founders as a like-minded group of theorists ends up promoting an uncomfortably one-sided reading of history."
Spending for the 2010 midterm elections
Noticing more ads when watching your favorite tv shows? (Jeopardy) It might have something to do with the record amounts of money being spent. It's a really interesting article, and it briefly describes the tea party as a faction.
The site where they gather some of their data from is http://www.citizen.org/Page.aspx?pid=183 It's a non-profit that has been around since 1971 and are the self-described "Defenders of Democracy"
Can we really trust polls?
This article does not include information I find critical in determining if we should value this polls information or not, for instance how many people were polled, what did they state as their political allegiance if they have one, and what was the age group of those polled. The ultimate question though is even if that information was provided can we still trust this poll, or any other poll?
In the article itself it states that "The problem with interpreting the generic ballot is that a national poll cannot produce the same results that 435 separate polls in 435 House districts would produce," so does that mean we shouldn't pay much attention to these polls that claim to be the "poll of polls" and what not?

Recession isn't over?
Although many experts say the recession is over, many everyday people disagree. Many are still out of work and many are wondering how it is possible to be out of a recession when the economy is so bad.
Historic election?
Article by legendary prognosticator Michael Barone saying the polling makes it look like this midterm could indeed be like 94.....1894 when the Republicans won 100 of 350 House seats. Some rather astonishing numbers of likely voters, saying if the voter turnout is lower (dems stay home) Republicans could win the popular vote (sorry Al Gore) by almost 20 points.
The NFL vs. Russ Feingold for Senate For a 4th Time
Russ Feingold's most recent bid for US Senate has got him pinned against the NFL. In a new advert for his campaign, Senator Feingold has compared "Mr. Johnson and the corperate interest" of prematurely assuming that the November election will go in their favor. In order to do this he used NFL clips of Randy Moss scoring at Lambeau. The NFL has now asked him to remove the clips to which the Feingold campaign has complied by editing the ads.
On another note, Senator Feingold mentioned a 2005 touchdown taunt by Moss as being, "one of the most significant moments" in Packers history. If I put a list of 100 most significant moments in Packers history, the Moss touchdown would be number 206. Not much of Packer Fan?

Obama Care number two
Ahh yes and Obama Care strikes again.
Now since this train has left the station, we will start to see more stories like the 3M story and McDonalds story.
You can keep your health care insurance, bunk.
I don't want to be miss understood, something needed to be done with our out of control heath care, but not this way.
Progressives in Madtown not motivated
An article about the Lefts lack of motivation about the Senate race in Madison (who can blame them during a Packer game). This is big because if Feingold doesn't dominate the 2nd district were Obama won almost 70% he will be in big trouble given the Republicans expected dominance in the suburban Milwaukee area.
Delaware Race Is Bellwether: All Politics Is Now National
Is new media the end of local politics? This article examines this question by using Christine O'Donnell's recent win as a framework. As the article states, "As money and media coverage cross state borders more easily than ever, driven by fiery commentators and online groups, we are bound to see politicians who are popular vehicles more than they are actual candidates, instruments of resentment whose grass-roots support may emanate mostly from states they have never visited." Are we moving away from both the trustee and delegate styles of representation, to a style that is less tied to local constituents than ever?
Murdoch tells Congress to secure Borders
I just found this pretty interesting because Murdoch owns many media outlets. Among them is the Fox News Channel whose slogan is Fair and Balanced. Not to make any judgements or anything because there are people out there who believe Fox News is slanted for conservatives, which securing the borders seems to be something along with that. But at the end of the article it says that Fox News is not anti-immigration, but some could feel this way since their leader is in front of Congress telling them this.
Obama Care
Obama Care was supposed to be the answer to out of control health care. The uninsured were to be the beneficiaries of this new program that was supposed to lower health care cost and make the health care system more accessible.
But the bill was 1000 plus pages and none of the legislators read the bill. According to House Speaker Pelosi, “we have to pass the bill first to see what’s in it”. Now that the bill has passed, against the will of the majority of Americans, we are now starting to see the unintentional consequences of this bill that was larger then the yellow pages.
McDonalds will have to cut the health care for it’s low wage earners. Was this really the answer to the health care problem?

The Houses uncertain agenda
This article discusses the agenda the House faces before they are able to adjourn. In the last few weeks of the session the Senate is still divided over whether to extend the Bush tax cuts before they expire and it is unlikely they will come to a decision before the session ends. Other bills waiting to be voted on are a NASA authorization bill, a child nutrition bill and a bill providing health care to Sept 11th first responders. The slow progress being made in the House before the session ends could be attributed to everyone anxiously awaiting the upcoming elections. Reelection is vital and is the most important thing on every ones plate right now.
Many Big Donors to Democrats Cut Support
The article suggests a kind of contribution "fatigue" among liberal donors, but I think they probably just don't want to waste their money on what they presume to be a lost cause. Maybe they are saving their money for 2012? It's interesting that at the begining of the electoral cycle, it was the Republicans that were scrambling for cash. In any event, record amounts of money are being spent this campaign season fueled in part by "Super PACs." Some estimates predict, "$3 billion in total spending on political and issue ads."
RECESSION ENDS!!! (over a year ago???)
This is an interesting article detailing the recent conclusion that the U.S. recession ended in June of 2009. How can this be? Aren't we all still upset that President Obama hasn't pulled this car out of the ditch yet? The article also points out that this was the longest recession since the Great Depression. Does this mean experts were correct when they predicted this would be the worst recession since the Great Depression soon after Wall Street collapsed? If this article is telling the truth, why are we all so upset?
Florida Democrats Start Advertisement Battle
In the Florida race for Governor, the Democratic party starts an advertisement that tries to put the death blow into the Republican candidate Charlie Crist.
Obama’s Visit Was Not Simple
This article offers an interesting glimpse at the political implications of Obama's visit to UW-Madison today, which was viewed more as a campaign rally for the Democratic Party than a presidential visit.
Ad's Target Seniors
Here is a neat article on advertisements, it shows how advertisements target a group of people and in this case it is in Indiana and seniors.
RE: GOP Leadership Ignores Ryan (from post below)
In this statement Ryan specifies first and foremost that his "Roadmap" addresses the national debt and unsustainable government growth, and well as the faltering economy. Most people agree that those are pressing issues. Most people also have very little faith in either the Republican or Democrats ability, or desire even, to confront the national debt and the bloating government. Neither party has the will to face these long term issues.
Perhaps in making a statement to Republicans that he won't play their games, that he won't join them in ignoring issues any longer, and that his plan is better then theirs, Ryan is hurting his career. But as critics of the "Pledge" have noted, it really has no guts. The "Pledge" is just a bunch of pretty pictures and posturing before November. Ryan's plan is concrete.
Anyone who were to take some time and explore his Roadmap for America's Future site can see just how in-depth his plan really is. It's laid out clear as day in great detail. Regardless of whether you agree with all or any of it, you can't dispute that is has guts. Here's the link.
http://www.roadmap.republicans.budget.house.gov/
Ryan's plan proposes putting some decision making, currently done by government, back in the hands of Americans. It's risky to be talking like that in Washington, with all those Republicans and Democrats running all over the place up there on the hill. Sometimes a leader needs to act in a risky manner in order to make a point about what he honestly feels is best for his country.
GOP Leadership Ignores Ryan
A quick note pointing out that Republican fiscal policy workhorse Paul Ryan doesn't seem likely to play a big part in the near-future GOP leadership.
Harry Reid Preps Procedural War against Republicans
This article discusses Harry Reid's efforts to control the final talking points before voters go to the polls. According to the article, this maneuver will give Democrats "a chance to talk about overseas jobs and tax loopholes and slam the Republican economic agenda" in effort to try and secure some of the Democratic seats up for re-election.
Star Power Used to Bring Attention to a Worthy Cause?
I want to first say that I am a fan of Stephan Colbert however, my first reaction was not positive to his apperence on Capital Hill Friday morning.
He appeared, in character, before a Senate Committee to testify about the issue of migrant farm workers in the US. He based his "testimony" off his one experience in the fields. Truthfully, I had seldom considered the issue of migrant farm work or lack there of, previous to this headline. So is it appropriate? The answer is not clear. He has brought attention to the issue, but at what cost to the public perspective of Senate Hearings?
Although I am not a fan of the Speaker of the House, she summed it up well when asked if it was appropriate for Mr. Colbert to testify by simply stating; "Of course I think it's appropriate. He's an American, right?"
In the words of Mr. Colbert himself, "USA #1".

Timing of the Tax Cut Vote
I thought this article really emphasized how American politics revolve around elections. Taking note of Harry Reid's reasoning for delaying the vote until after elections seems to be a bit of a paradox. He wants the vote post-election due to the "hesitancy of some politically vulnerable Democrats", though his party could (is likely to) lose the majority. I'm not sure I understand Reid's reasoning here! If anyone could shed some light on this I'm greatly interested.
Slick William Clinton
Can anyone, Republican or Democrat, watch this and not get a little twinge of nostalgia with regard to our 42nd President William Jefferson Clinton?
This was on Morning Joe - an MSNBC program I rarely miss that airs weekdays 5-8am, which has gotten rough on me since I lost my DVR capabilities due to the emergence of my roommate as a total cheapskate/deadbeat, but I digress - this Thursday. Contained within the discourse about the various topics discussed are some nice references to what Bill Clinton might suggest to President Obama and his fellow Dem's, especially considering the volatile climate surrounding the upcoming midterm elections.

Congress to look into football related concussions
I think this and the whole steroids debate in baseball bring up an interesting debate. I am a huge sports fan, and obviously I want baseball to be steroid free and hate seeing football players going down with concussions. But there seems to be a debate on whether or not the government should step in and tell sports leagues how to run their leagues and teams. Should Congress be able to change things in sports and if the economy is a mess. And if there is the War on Terror going on, 14.2 percent or whatever it is now jobless rate, and so may other issues going on, should they be taking a day to talk about sports?

Barrett closes in on Walker
In the Wisconsin gubernatorial race, Milwaukee Major Tom Barrett is gradually closing in on Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker's lead. Given Walker's more extreme record on many issues including supporting the sale of Milwaukee Parks to private owners and cutting over 300 Milwaukee county jobs during an economic crisis, it seems as though Barrett is more likely to take the moderate vote.

Thank You Sarah Palin for more Republican women candidates
This election season has had more women republican candidates then before. According to the article Sarah Palin opened the door for these women. Only 73 seats in the House are held by women and in the Senate only 17 are women.
Republicans May Strip Murkowski of Committee Slot
As the Republican Party moves to support their candidates, it seems like they might have to deal with some folks who aren't on board the Tea Party Express. Murkowski might be the first victim. Why might the GOP punish Murkowski while the Democrats allowed Joseph Lieberman to keep his committee posts?
UPDATE: Murkowski keeps committee assignment, but resigns as vice chairman of the Senate Republican Conference. More of a haircut than a beheading.

Popular Dem Gov free-falling in Senate race.
The Democratic Governor of West Virginia, whose job approval in Charleston is over 60% and once had close to a 20% lead to take over the late Robert Byrd's seat, now trails Republican Jon Rease by 3. The people feel he has done a very good job running the state but apperatly are less enthuasistic of him in the Senate. I conclude that they are basing their decesion on National politics (ie Healthcare, stimulus etc), because otherwise he should be winning based on his popularity as Governor. If politics were local he should win. This to me shows the Republican stratagey of nationalizing all the races will work, and Democrats need to make every election local, like the 30some Democratcs running for the House running ads against Nancy Pelosi.
Campaign funding used for personal expenses
It seems Odonnell has used some of her campaign finacing to fund herself rather then her campaign. She supposdeldy used $20,000 on personal expenses. So now an independent group is going after her for breaking the rules, it will be interesting to see how this will hinder her bid for election.
Tea Party Success and Possible Civil War for the GOP
The Tea Party is causing quite the controversy even within the Republican party. This article really shows some good insight to how some other Republican candidates feel about the Tea Party and it discusses the possible seperation of the Republican party because of the Tea Party Express.
Some Democrats break with leaders on tax cuts
Nancy Pelosi and House Majority leader Steney Hoyer were sent a letter by 31 House Democrats supporting the continuation of tax breaks for everyone, rather than letting them expire for the wealthy. Unsurprisingly, as we discussed in class the importance of appearing moderate, many of those who signed are up for reelection this year.
Tea Party Victory for Democrats?
Democrats see the Tea Party victories as a positive for the up coming elections because it is showing a divide in the Republican party as a whole.
Democrats Invoking Palin to Stir Base
This week in class, we briefly discussed pragmatic parties and pure parties. This article from the New York Times makes a fairly strong claim that the Democratic Party's current approach is completely pragmatic. Instead of attaching themselves to any sort of definite ideology, the Democratic Party is instead focused on branding the opposition; thereby leaving themselves as the only viable alternative. They are also strategically painting Palin as the head of the Republican Party, whether or not the Republican Party would agree, in order to appeal to a greater number of voters.
Joseph Cao Loves the Obama!
I thought this was a good example of a candidate trying to appeal to the center. Joseph Cao, a republican congressman representing Louisiana's 2nd district is obviously appealing to democrats. It is also interesting to note that his website is primarily blue. More evidence of the battle for middle ground.

Dem Hopeful ask Pelosi to Step Down.
Brett Carter is running in the Tennessee 6th, a seat held by fellow Democrat Bart Gordon since 1984 but is solidly Republican, stated he feels Nancy Pelosi should step down and that he would not vote for her as Speaker. With her approval rating at a mindboggling 11% will more Dems throw her under the bus to get themselves elected?
Johnson and Feingold to debate three times
I chose this article because debates can really have an impact on a congressional race. The number of times can be tricky to determine because just as a member can improve themselves in a debate, they can also screw themselves as well. I know Feingold wanted five debates at one time, but they had to compromise to three.
National Republicans Embrace O'Donnell
While we were in class, the GOP decided to get on board with Christine O'Donnell and their Delaware primary voters.
Tea Party
It seems that not only are established Republicans having trouble holding onto office over the summer months. Looks like the tea party movement might just have some steam after all. For many, the country appears to be going in the wrong direction and that direction is being helped with Republicans that think big government is the norm. Enter the Tea Party to get Republicans or Conservatives to rethink their positions as voters seem to be willing to throw the bums out and retake their government back. With all this movement and Obama polling in the low 40's, seem like politicians on both side of the aisle are rethinking positions. Most Dems must be scared even when Fiengold dodged Obama when he came to town to stomp for Barrett. Is Obama the poster child for what's wrong with government?
Website colors
The tidbit about website colors from class monday piqued my interest slightly, but I decided to look into it a bit only after I noticed all the GREEN in Paul Ryan's site yesterday. I went to http://www.gop.gov/contact/members/name to see how many of his fellow REPUBLICANS also have large amounts of green all over their sites (I supposed green would be more likely found in significant quantities on DEMOCRATS' sites). Of the 28 congressmen/women whose sites I checked out, (last names beginning A-B) I only found 3 more with any significant amounts of GREEN (Gus Bilirakis, John Boehner, and Mary Bono Mack). ...Oh well. However I noticed that of those 28 sites, only 8 had anything more than nearly unnoticeable hints of RED. Isn't that the GOP's favorite color??? Nearly all were completely BLUE.
Of the first 27 DEMOCRAT house member's sites I checked (last names beginning A-B), roughly half had GREEN in them, but none had nearly as much as Ryan's. As expected, all of them were completely BLUE, but only three had any hint of RED in them.
Bush Tax cuts
This is a pretty nice article that relates somewhat to what we were discussing in class on monday 9-13-2010 about how if you stray away from your parties ideologies you sometimes get shunned and ridiculed by your own members. It deals with a Republican figure, in this case Boehner stating he would side with Obama on the Bush Tax issue if he had no other choice. Other republican congressmen and women ridiculed his statement and his decision to side with the "opposition".
governator looking for Russia
This has very little to do with Congressional Politics, expect that its the Governator. I just thought it was funny that he "twittered" about flying over Alaska and making jokes about Sarah Palin and her famous seeing Russia from Alaska comments.
external influence...
I found the bit in this editorial article about the Delaware GOP Senate primary really interesting. It's really interesting to note that the key power players behind many of these new ideologues showing up out of the tea party seem to be exclusively national figures, especially from the media. "all politics is local", to me, seems to be a dying phrase, especially regarding the tea party movement. Can politics be Too nationalized?

Work ahead for Congress
With the big oil spill in the Gulf, Congress is only beginning the process of figuring out an appropriate action. It seems that something will be done, but with so many other things going on in Congress, such as Immigration, Financial Reform, and worrying about reelection, something will have to go to the back burner.

I thought this was interesting considering the unexpected retirement of Dave Obey. Seems like they are in a quandry.
Wall St. hypocrisy?
In the ongoing Wall St. reform battle between Republicans and Democrats words have been hurled back and forth in the attempt to define the opposition. Recently Senator Reid said something to the effect that Mitch McConnel and his ilk were cozying up to Wall St. Yet as this article shows, Reid has done some cozying of his own. An invitation to a financial firm on Wall St. for a Reid campaign fundraiser was discovered by Politico. Reid says it's not solicitation for campaign contributions from Wall St. PAC's, but doesn't it seem reasonable that someone on his campaign staff would have double checked the mailing list?
The party's control of Congress depends in part on Hispanics, a key constituency, voting Democratic
The Dems concerned about losing seats, not must at least policy court the Hispanics on the immigration reform. If they do not successfully pull this off, they are afraid they will lose control over congress. With many open seats, this is not the time to anger this key voting block.
“Hispanic voters have long been frustrated that Obama's campaign promise to pass immigration reform has not been kept. Some members of the House Hispanic Caucus agreed to vote for his health care overhaul on the understanding that he would push immigration reform through this year.”
Now is the time to belly up to the bar!!!

Obey To Retire
David Obey, the House Appropriations Committee Chairman and a senior member of the congressional Democratic leadership, has announced that he will retire this November. Obey is a representative for WI's 7th congressional district and has been in office since 1969. This will definitely open the eyes of Republicans who will see this as a pivotal moment. Democrats, on the other hand, have to be concerned that this may create a ripple effect and lead to them losing House majority.
Biometric Social Security cards
This article details a plan put forth by D- Chuck Schumer and R-Linsey Graham. The plan would link your social security card through biometrics. This plan they claim would prevent illegal immigrants from getting work through fake I.D.s. This sounds like a great plan however there are problems. Michael Cherry who is president of identification-technology company Cherry biometrics questions several parts. "What study have we done?" "We just have a few assumptions" Cherry states. The article lists potential problems such as the size and scale of the project and the costs of making companies install these card readers. The error rate would be less than 1% however that number comes to 1.5 million people as the article states. Finally this quote makes me the most skeptical of the techonlogy, "Cherry half-jokes that someone could falsify such an ID in 15 minutes, and Khosla says that while current technology makes fingerprints the most feasible biometric marker to use, they're also one of the easiest to steal." Dean Pradeep Khosla is founding director of Carnegie Mellon's cybersecurity lab. I think that before we trust the government with this massive a program we make sure that it can be done correctly.
Sen Nelson convinces Obama to review Off Shore Drilling
In light of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Florida Sen Nelson asked Obama to stop all new offshore drilling until a review of safety can be completed. After spending the day surveying the impact of the spill, it looks like the future of offshore drilling is in jeopardy.

Seven Questions about the 2010 Election
John Sides of the Monkey Cage posts some thoughts on the kinds of questions he thinks that political journalists should be asking. These would make for more interesting news stories than eating in a diner in every single state, no?
More of the same...
This article is essentially just discussing the fact that this year's mid-terms are looking to be a rough election for democrats, even though there are some optimistic democrats. It is interesting the comment towards the beginning of the article about how even though the republicans were prepared in 2006, they still lost because it was essentially a referendum of the party in power.
"Henry, I agree with you about two things," Pelosi interjected. "The president put out some numbers, and, number two, you don't speak for the House."
"That exchange captures the power that the speaker wields. She — not a committee chairman — is the Democratic decider on almost every major issue, from which bills reach the House floor to key political decisions involving campaigns." – Paul Kane, The Washington Post.

Immigrant rallies on Saturday
This article details the immigration rallies scheduled for all over the country to protest the new immigration law passed in Arizona. The largest will be in Los Angeles and smaller ones are all across the nation. The congressman in my research paper will be involved in one in Downtown San Bernardino as well. Joe Baca has claimed he will not fly through Arizona airports until the law is repealed. I think he is probably an extremist on the issue most Hispanics are unlikely to take it that far. Many Hispanics are livid with the law claiming it will increase profiling and racial anger. This article however states that roughly 1,000 Americans were polled and 71 percent agree with the Arizona law. This sets up an interesting dynamic in the border states as to which party will benefit the most from this change. I personally think the law is over-reaching and will create tensions for those who are legal residents and will now be under suspicion unfortunately. This brings up one question that I have with the Hispanics who are citizens who do not want a secure border. If illegal immigration was tougher then laws like the one in Arizona would never be put into place. I understand solidarity but then they should push for reforms that make legal immigration easier, not illegal immigration.
Senate dem's change course for mid terms
The Senate responds to the New Arizona law on immigration in an attempt to keep the latino vote. With mid term elections comming up soon, this is one of the issues they did not want to tackle. With Arizona and now Texas as the hot beds of immigrations, they are forced to introduce a sweeping reform bill to help them keep the traditional latino vote.
Of idiots and politics.
I'm back everyone! I know you've missed my posts but here's one to wet your appetite. Okay, so the scoop on today's post is this: The GOP is starting to get infuriated over Reid's persistant push for financial reform saying that his actions on the floor are an attempt to paint the Republicans in a poor light. Reid's spokesman has confirmed as much saying that the Democrats are fighting back. It's turned into a war of words and it looks like the tactic the Dems have been using is starting to work, maybe. Then again it might not be enough to stem a growing discontent with the popularly defined politics as usual.

Fight for midterm elections not confined to traditional battlegrounds
The mid-term battles begin, but this time more and more traditionally demarcate held seats are running into serious opposition. Many quality challengers are running hard at the core of the Democratic Party’s core seats. Even Representative David R. Obey who has kept his seat for many years is running into a possible upset. The incumbency advantage this election cycle may not be enough to prevent hard core demarcates from losing their seats. While mid-term elections generally favor the minority part, this cycle may tip the scales to the republicans. In any case it seems like the dem’s will lose there bullet proof majority and will lessen Obama’s chances of pushing his agenda through without some major compromises.
Immagration and climate change
What do these two have in common? Answer:
Hispanics voted heavily Democratic in 2008, and they've been disappointed with President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats for not following up on campaign promises to reform immigration laws. Reid is up for re-election this year and trailing in polls in Nevada.
Kerry needs Reed, but Reeed does not need Kerry. I guess the committee did not get the consesous they hoped for!!

Medicare could become a major political liability for Democratic lawmakers in the midterm elections.
The latest report warns of issues with the group that has the most weight in elections, the seniors. This is the group that ALWAYS turns out for elections. Typically in the 80%, range judging by the last 20 years of election data. This could become the first shot fired across the bow as it were. I am willing to bet this will be a “hot topic of contention” I n the midterm elections.
15,000 Protest in FAVOR of tax increases
There is the beginning of a counter-tea party movement. 15,000 people protested in Peoria, Illinios against cuts in education and in favor of tax increases. They shouted "Show some guts!"
Most Tea party crowds boast numbers in the hundreds, if this message gains some momentum, it could drown out the supposed influence of the Tea Party.

Goldman Sachs sued over Paulson non-disclosure
This article details the current lawsuit against Goldman-Sachs by the SEC over allegations that Goldman defrauded two clients by not disclosing John Paulson was betting the mortgages would fail. These allegations involve a derivative market set up to bet for and against the success of sub prime mortgages that many prominent brokerage firms became involved in. Paulson heads an investment firm that bet the mortgages would fail, and they in fact did. This fallout led to massive economic problems including bailouts of prominent investment firms. The firms believed the mortgages were diversified enough that they would not fail. Goldman-Sachs also lost money in the deal. Paulson made a significant amount of money. This led to the Wall street has run amok comments from politicians, and attempts to now reform bank lending practices. I think since Goldman bet the wrong side thinking Paulson was wrong it is hard to claim they defrauded investors.

Senate is hours from bringing Financial Reform to the Floor
The Financial Reform Bill passed through the Senate Banking Committee on a party line vote. It also cleared the Agricultural Committee garnering one Republican vote. With the Lincoln Ammendment on Derivitive regulations, and Senator Corkers outspoken support for the bill, it looks like the votes are in place to invoke cloture, and cut off debate. It looks like it is all over but the shout.
Conservatives Look To Take Back Control
With midterm elections approaching, conservatives are looking to regain some control in the White House. Obama's luster appears to be fading among the public so republican's chances of gaining control seem to be good.
Goldman Sachs fills pockets on both sides of the aisle.
Prior to the SEC lawsuit filed against Goldman Sachs the company "dished out $300,000" in contributions to lawmakers for March. Only slightly more funds were contributed to Republicans. With financial reform on the table I thought this was of note.
Nobody trusts the government
Is there anything new? While there may be a small jump in the number of people who don't trust the government, it seems to me that there is hardly ever a time when people trust them!
New contender for Wisconsin's senate race?
The announcement by Thomson that he will not run has now led to the possibility that other more credible candidates will now take part. Ron Johnson is the newest possible contender. He has money and does not seem to have any of the idiotic positions or baggage the other candidates have. Leinenkugel has baggage as Doyle's commerce secretary, Terrance wall hasn't paid state income taxes in 5 years, and Westlake has raised less than 14,000 dollars with his idiotic T shirt selling campaign. The unknown factor however is how much does Johnson actually know about politics because anyone who debates Feingold better have a good grasp of the issues otherwise Feingold will make them look stupid. I think Paul Ryan is the same for the Republicans. I don't think you have to agree with these candidates to know that both are very smart and the opponents need to put strong candidates to oppose them otherwise it will be a rough campaign.
Taking it to the bank-ing committee
I'm not so sure that you would call them "unusual suspects", but there is talk of a handful of Republicans jumping ship when it comes down to a vote on financial reform. Minority leader, Sen. McConnell went around today securing all but one signatures; Sen. Collins of Maine, pledging to hold out against a banking bill. It's interesting to note that Sen. McCain originally pushed for a return of the Glass-Steagall Act, which the article notes is much more liberal than the current bill. With financial reform a largely bipartisan issue, it's likely the Democrats will get their way but we'll see if they offer any concessions to those Republicans on the fence.
"The Political Equivalent of a Suicide Bomber."
Another “Tiger woods” affair, but with his seat on the line, I don’t think even with the incumbents advantage he can win. This was the Republicans main man to challenge Obama in the 2012 presidential race. It will be interesting to see who the “tea Party” comes up with to challenge him.

Can Reid ratify a treaty?
On top of a huge backlog of House bills, many with broad Republican support, Harry Reid now has a Supreme Court Justice appointment to approve and a nuclear arms treaty to ratify. Of course, Republicans are threatening to fillibuster.
Republicans Make Repealing Healthcare Reform #1 Priority
No big surprise here. However, a few senators have to walk a fine line with how much they want to be on board with replacing the bill. Should there be a big turnover in Congress, these guys may not get everything they want.
This is the one thing that bothers me about bill such as this. They are too vulnerable to political will.

Supreme Court Nomination Battle
As the article says, it could be an interesting summer depending on who Obama nominates to fill the Supreme Court vacancy. No matter how you look at it, you figure that the Senate Republicans will do what they've done all along and slow down the process of any nominee. This could end up pushing Obama to nominate someone with more moderate views.

Tea Party target Stupak
The "tea Party" might not be a political party such as the current DNC or RNC they never the less are playing a part in the moment of congress. Here is an example of a third party having an impact on the status quo. right after they "target" him he retires. Another casualty of the Health Care vote?
Stevens' Day(s) in Court
You heard it here first; maybe not, Justice Stevens is retiring. The big question now is of course who, he will fill the vacancy with when Stevens officially leaves in late June or early July. The article lists Obama's likely candidates based on his list from last year and the various pros and cons of choosing one over the other. Either way, the next appointment is likely to reflect Stevens' ideological leanings if not the intensity of them.
The new congressional healthcare biill?
On Tuesday, the Senate health committee voted 12-11 in favor of a two-page amendment that would require all Members and their staffs to enroll in any new government-run health plan..It took me less than a minute to sign up to require our congressmen and senators to drink at the same trough!Congressman John Fleming ( Louisiana physician) has proposed an amendment that would require congressmen and senators to take the same health care plan they force on us (under proposed legislation they are curiously exempt).

Leinenkugel vs Feingold
This may be interesting, a quality Challenger in the running. After today's "tea party" he looks like he is gaining traction in the race. If he does in fact win the seat, i wounder how much political capital this will give the "tea party" for the house seats?

Partisan Politics
This seems to be a good example of partisan politics at work. The Republicans have found a nice hole which they are exploiting to try and stop a judicial nominee from being approved. It almost seems that the Obama administration kind of set themselves up for this by not revealing this information.
U.S. will have new nuke stance, will other nations follow?
The U.S., with a push from the obama administration, is adopting a new policy in regards to nuclear weaponry. The new nuclear strategy calls for a halt to the development of new nuclear weapons and limits the use of the existing arsenal on nonnuclear states that are in compliance with nonproliferation agreements. This is a strong message by the U.S. that may ultimately create a nuclear free world. However, it is yet to be seen if other states around the world will follow this plan of peace.
Counterfactuals in Health Care Reform
Try your hand at explaining this claim from House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn: "I don't think we would have ever gotten health care if we stayed on that 60-vote strategy. I really believe that that was a blessing in disguise."
He was for being a Maverick before he was against it.
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) after finding himself facing very strong primary challenge from fmr. Rep JD Hayworth, has found himself trying to rewrite history. After running for President (twice) as a self pro-claimed "Maverick", McCain tells Newsweek that he, "I never considered myself a maverick," he told Newsweek. "I consider myself a person who serves the people of Arizona to the best of his abilities."
While one can understand the desire, and sometimes necessity to play to the base in the primary while reaching out to the middle in the general, it seems nakedly political, almost absurdly so, to become some sort of born-again conservative. McCain is receiving poor advice if his strategists tell him this will win over the Arizona Tea Party crowd, whom could make up a big share of the primary electorate.
It is even more absurd when one considers items like this gem,

Petraeus run for President?
This article from the UK discusses the Americans general disgust with the United States political scene. The article states that people want another outsider, not someone from inside Washington. How many outsiders can we have? Petraeus has no interest as of now in running for president and personally I could not see Obama being unseated by him. The article discusses how the public disdain is largely aimed at congress more than the President. I think that if the unemployment rate does not decrease measurably the public will want changes again in 2010 and 2012. The question is how long after the change if there is one in 2012, will people be sick of that person? I can understand why Petraeus doesn't really seem to want the job even though some feel he would be a good candidate because of the economy, Iran, the social security crisis, the energy crisis, health care problems etc... who would really want the job?
Orlando doctor tells Obama Healthcare supporters to go elsewhere.
This is the United States of America so he has a right to this opinion. The article states that he is walking a thin line between his freedoms and the oath he took to provide care. I think the sign is obnoxious and stupid. The doctor says he is not questioning his patients about their political beliefs, but this is still not something doctors should be engaging in while working. The doctor has a sign on the door that tells people if they support Obama care he does not want their business and if people walk away because they are annoyed by it then that is fine. This doctor is a moron. First he does not like the healthcare plan because he believes it will hurt his business and health care for people, however what does alienating customers who disagree with him do for his business or their health care? I'm sure it does not help. I think there are proper places to address your concerns with the healthcare proposal, at your clinic is not one of them.

Weird, wild stuff
Not really weird or wild for those that need insight into the mindblowing title. Anyway, there's a question among some Democratic camps about whether bracing for the upcoming midterms by withholding on certain controversial bills is worth it after the passing of health care reform or whether caution is indeed practical. The argument is essentially that Democrats should take advantage of their unified power to pass their legislative agenda in preparation of possible changes in the midterms. Really neat stuff.
Economy still a factor?
Some former advisors for Bill Clinton are saying that even with an improving economy, the democrats could still be hurt by it because of the lack of improvement on the unemployment rate. So yet another variable for the mid-terms is brought up!
Redistricting 2010
The article provides a look into the politics of the 2010 redistricting process and funding for those efforts.
The Founders and Health Care
I always enjoyed those essays in political theory classes which forced you to argue how such-and-so philosopher would have felt about some distinctly contemporary problem. The difficulty with using the Founders as a group in this same light is that they had fairly diverse preferences; it's not hard for us to find internally conflicting views or to look back and find a hero or a villain and often times in the same Founder. With that being said, Here's an argument by way of Ezra Klein that examines the similarities in the processes of the national founding and health care reform.
Senior citizens, who typically make up about one in five midterm voters, represent a particularly valuable but tough audience on this issue
The Mid-term election will be very difficult for incumbents with the excited Senior citizen crowd coming out in force. With 20% of the vote, they are the election makers/breakers. The Health care issue will certainly be a difficult position for many legislators going up for another term. Since the minority party usual gains in mid-terms and with a excited elctorate it will be interesting. In this peice, "About half of respondents (49 percent) said Obama won't be a factor in their vote in November", the "Obama factor" will not play into the elections. Those with quality candadate will be in jepordy.
Health care part duex
This is the "fix" for the bill they just ramed through. So we will have health care (2), providing the house passes it. With mid-terms commng up fast, many congressmen(women) want to get back home soon to start the re-election battle, and the all important fund raising. With the bills passed, it will be interesting to see if the poll numbers translate into turnovers. Most of the polls show a dissatisfaction with the healthcare bill as it is, it will be interesting to see of this translates into a huge turnover.
As we inch closer to election time, i am sure the polls will change again.

Is obama the antichrist?
It is frightening to see the amount of distortion in republican's views of Obama and the health care bill. I think the nov elections will be extremely divisive and msnbc and fox news are licking their chops right now as a large percentage of the country spins into hysteria.
States sue claiming Medicaid will bust budget
14 states have now sued the federal government over the health care program claiming the expansion of Medicaid will wreck the budget. The article details how California which is 20 Billion in debt could have 2-3 billion more placed on them with the expansion of this program. The article discusses how many states are already having trouble with the budget now and this is unfeasible. The article discusses that this economic period has resulted in less revenue coming in and states have a hard time paying for what they currently run. I understand Obama wants to help people however he needs to understand the ramifications of things like the stimulus package on the deficit and medicaid expansion on states budgets.

The format isn't great for getting the data out into say a spreadsheet, but it does help make comparisons across states. Rasmussen Poll on Health care plan
This is a poll that discusses several different factors with regard to the health care plan. I think they clearly define why this bill may cost some politicians their careers. The article has several polls, one discusses that 50% would be more likely to vote against someone who voted in favor of the bill. The polls also show that 57% believe that the plan will hurt the economy and many also believe that this plan will cost more than is estimated. Large numbers are also against any reduction in funding for medicare, and by 2014 this plan if it stays on track will force everyone to purchase health insurance, that provision is not popular. My final thought on healthcare is that many will question how the no votes became yes votes in recent days, and how much were they given in bribes to change their vote. The problem is that healthcare can be improved and the cost lowered, but nothing I have seen in this plan will accomplish that. I hope I am wrong, but I do not think that I am.
A Brief Guide to This Weekend's Health Care Vote
A quick primer on what to expect with the health care reform bill this weekend. Impress your friends and loved ones during spring break.
Kucinich going rogue.
Okay, so as I'm sure everyone knows Dennis Kucinich, long the face of opposition to the current manifestation of the health care bill, has decided to cast his vote in favor of the bill. He's advocated the public option and recently several provisions within the bill that have been taken out. Despite this he's decided to vote for it knowing the costs it could pose to him politically and the importance of passing the bill now given dwindling momentum for such a piece of legislation.
Dems Six Votes Short...
The battle continues. House leadership is still six votes short of the number necessary to pass healthcare reform.
Inside-out
Okay, so here it is. The Democrats have released an ad attacking Mitch McConnell for being obstructionist an a scheming wheeler and dealer. Mostly it seems that they're trying to paint McConnell as a Washington insider; a parallel to our readings, concerned only about the system and not the people. We'll see how the ad plays out I guess.
The Parliamentary Battle continues...
I know we have only been studying Congress for a few months but I don't remember when parliamentary procedures were so important to pass legislation especially when the party in the majority is the one trying to pass it. Forgive my ignorance of its history.
More Congressional Flophouses
Apparently, George Miller isn't the only one running a flophouse. An article from ABC's The Note mentions and links to stories about several other similar lodging arrangements.
Heatlhcare 2010 Strategic Voting
Key votes for the healthcare bill. But the talk is that may make or break them in the upcomming midterms. This is a classic case I think of strategic voting, the way they vote will have dire consequences at the mid term elections. Of the “Top 5”, three have quality challengers. This will be another reason for the short vote, if they can not get a “full house” onboard it could spell major problems in the future for the 3rd house, the president.
United States of Corporate America

Democrats may attempt "Slaughter solution" to pass healthcare bill
This article details a bill that would in effect pass the healthcare bill by voting on another bill that would approve changes to it. This seems the the most illegitimate attempt yet to get the votes to pass this bill. This is bordering on absurd now and may be challenged on legal grounds that article one of the constitution discusses that a bill cannot be passed to enact another bill. This bill does not have the votes due to various parts that are considered controversial, the special kickbacks and federal funding of abortion that many are uneasy about taking a vote on. The senate bill must be passed in its entirety because reconciliation can only be applied to bills that have been enacted, not bills that have yet to be passed. This is not the way major legislation should be handled.
Defense of Marriage Between Man and Horse
McCain's opponent from the "right" suggests that the Supreme Court has allowed for the interpretation of marriage to be extended to Horses!! Hayworth may wish to extend his absurd (which he did acknowledge) notion to include the intimate relation many people have for fictional characters.
Which way will it go??
This article explains the various paths which the healthcare debate could take in the coming days/weeks. The general consensus is that it will be voted on later this week, but nobody is real sure how that will come out. It seems that the longer this is dragged out, the more complicated it is becoming.

Just in case there are birthers in Class
The birther theory goes back to at least 2007. Does anyone seriously believe, that with these rumors circulating, and the amount of money both Hillary Clinton and John McCain had for opposition research that they would not have definitively proved Barrack Obama was ineligible?
This link shows transcripts from Hardball, where a Clinton campaign advisor gives a backhanded compliment about his Indonesian Heritage. Obviously, they sent opposition research to Indonesia to investigate his time there. They were able to prove that he attended school there. But that is not the claim the birthers make.
There is also a video from Hardball, where he interviews Rep. Campbell from California, who is co-sponsoring a bill to require all Presidential candidates to produce their birth certificate before they can assume office. Chris Mathews shows the congressman a copy of Obama's Certificate of Live Birth.
How much will "birthers" affect 2010 in the Senate?
If you look at 5 major candidates for U.S. Senate, maybe quite bit,
Money quote
"Several of these candidates have later corrected their initial hesitation, but it is precisely that initial hesitation that contains so much information about what Republican candidates fear right now. No doubt that Portman and Marco Rubio know that Birtherism is bullshit. The gap between their private beliefs and how they articulate them publicly is fairly wide. I'm not a fan of stories that begin with X 'refuses to denounce' Y -- I usually skip them. I make an exception here because the accusation is so reckless, so tied to race and culture, and so stupid that those who try to Wink at the Birthers are adding potency to a poison that everyone is forced to gulp."

Not copying I swear. Brown nosing if possible, absolutely. So here's some more fundraising stuff, although a little more tame. Since there ain't no party like a midterm fundraising party, what gives with not even showing up to your own fundraiser especially when Obama is dishing out some major burns? Well this article gives a little insight into the rhetoric behind fundraising and candidate strategy. Six Reasons Why Barack Obama is Still the Favorite to Win in 2012

Massa's situation
It will be interesting to see whether Massa actually goes through and resigns this evening, or whether he rescinds his resignation. It seems like he doesn't want to resign, but feels like this is his way of getting his voice heard seriously.
congress vs. the federal reserve
This presents us with an inside look into public banking policy. Congress has the means to change the system, but the question is will the courts uphold any changes to the previous independence of the Fed. If congress changes the status quo what will that mean to you and I who have to trust the banking system? What that mean to insurance? Not that long ago Congress had an issue with their own bank that failed. If they cannot run their own bank how do they expect to run the banks of the nation?
Getting the Ball Rolling on the Repeal of DADT
A group of Democratic Senators introduced legislation to end the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy in the military.
Personally, I am eager to see this antiquated policy repealed and hope that it has the votes it needs to pass. However, the article states that "neither Lieberman nor Levin said they were assured of having 60 votes to push it through the Senate" which is worrisome.
Here's an op-ed from one of the bill's sponsors (who is the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee), Senator Carl Levin, if you're interested.

The Presidents Proposal on Health care
I think since there has been so much debate about what is really in the healthcare plan I would add a link to the President's proposal so people can get an idea of what is actually in it. I think there are some good ideas about trying to get insurance companies to spend more on patient care than bonuses or advertising, I am curious as to how they would enforce such a thing. I also think that the democrats are demonizing the insurance companies as well for political gain. I think health care costs go up because technology improves, and people want the best care and that can become expensive. I think some companies are abusive and obnoxious, however this problem is more than just insurance companies, it is the amount of malpractice insurance doctors must carry, the fact they must perform more tests than are needed usually to prevent the possibility of being sued as well. These all add to the cost of healthcare and once again pre-existing conditions being covered could be abused significantly. I do not like insurance companies and if we can get them to stop some of their abuses, a student mentioned connecting costs to credit scores, etc.., but if they cannot compete with government plan the type of healthcare we get could be much worse than what we get now.
do you know where you stand?
A very interesting survey. It is disticly british, but it also reflectes our views here as well. I took this survey and the results were a little suprising, you may not realize whereyou really stand. I thought i was mid right, only to find i was slightly right and very idealistic in nature. I would take the time to see where you really are, it will suprise you.
Leaked documents reveal GOP plan to use scare tactics to raise money
Documents left in a hotel room revealed plans for the republican strategies in 2010. The strategy is to scare people away from the possibility of a "trend towards socialism." Several caricatures of key democrat officials were found as well, including the "Obama as the joker" used by the tea parties.
I think its unsavory to see campaign ads bashing another candidate, and makes me want to vote for them even less because they have to deface the opponent to make themselves look better. A fear campaign, to me, seems to be an ignorant strategy.
